There were many outstanding performers across all grades.  Matthew Ryan was an impressive winner of the Gr 1/2 singles title against the always difficult to beat Aussie James Morris.  Brian McGahey won Gr 1/2 doubles (with Eamonn Murtagh) and mixed doubles (with Anne-Marie Darcy) while Sinead O’Meara won Gr 1/2 doubles (with Deirdre McSherry) and Gr 3 doubles (with Tara Spain).

Ciara Cairns won singles and mixed (with Conor O’Meara) and the ever consistent Mary Minogue won ladies doubles (with equally consistent Doireann Kennedy) and mixed (with Padraig Hickey) in their respective grades.  Kieran Grace was also in top form, winning both singles and doubles (with Catriona Cleary) in their category.

Meanwhile in the H’cap mixed, veteran Eamon Dillon teamed up with Anne-Marie Darcy to win an exciting 3 set encounter against the formidable combination of Eamonn Murtagh and Kate Heduan.

Following the finals David Hackett (Joint Club Capt) and Margaret Folan (Pres) thanked Conor and Loreto Slattery for their generous sponsorship of the tournament.  Matthew Ryan and Eamon Dillon, on behalf of the players, expressed similar sentiments to the Slatterys as well as complimenting tournament organisers David Hackett and Pauline Ryan and the many back-up personnel whose work meant a most enjoyable week for all.

Open Nights and Other Events

There’s 2 Open Nights in the club, on this Thurs 28^th Sept and on Tues 3^rd Oct.  Open to anyone who might like to try the game, or former players coming back.  Come at 7 pm.  See club’s Facebook page.

The next event will be the annual ‘Tadhg O’Flynn Classic’ starting mid-October and there’s a Car Treasure Hunt coming up.  Details on these are on club’s Facebook page.

Everyone has been thoroughly enjoying the fine tea and cakes (and tennis!) – we’re looking forward to seeing as many members out this evening to enjoy themselves. Bar Open – Food Served Later – as always great tennis and laughter – all welcome!

Nenagh Retain Munster Senior Tennis Cup

Nenagh LTC retained the Munster Senior Tennis Cup when defeating Limerick Lawn by 3/2 in a tense exciting final at Sunday’s Well, Cork on Sunday last. The Nenagh team was Anne-Marie Darcy (Capt), Lena O’Connor, Frank O’Keeffe and David Hackett.

It didn’t look good for Nenagh early on, losing the opening singles and mixed rubbers. But it all came good in the remaining 3 rubbers. Lena O’Connor (singles) and Lena/Anne-Marie Darcy (doubles) recorded excellent wins. It was now down to David Hackett/Frank O’Keeffe who were involved in nail-biter. They won the first set 6/4, but lost a 5/1 lead and a number of match points in the 2nd, eventually losing 6/7. Then, to test supporters’ nerves, after leading 3/1 in the 3rd, were 3/4, 4/5 and 5/6 down, before clinching it in the tiebreaker, to the delight a big Nenagh contingent!

Grade 4 & 5 Finalists

Nenagh also had two other Teams representing the Club on finals day. The Ladies team of Deirdre O’Brolchain Pauline Ryan, Richelle Treacy (Capt), and Ciara Cairns were denied victory in the Grade 4 (Keane Cup) against Causeway (Dungarvan), losing out in the deciding ‘super doubles’ after some epic comeback leveling the fixture at 2 all, after being edged out in the first rubbers. Very good Nenagh performance though and well done to Causeway, deserved Champions on the day.

The Grade 5 Mixed team (Eamon Dillon, Tom Walsh, Therese Brophy and Christina Costello) went down gallantly to a very good Limerick Lawn team whom we congratulate. It was an heroic performance by the Nenagh team – Tom particularly enjoying himself – all great matches in an enjoyable final, and like both other Nenagh teams they did their club proud on the day.

Well done to all the Nenagh teams and players AND supporters – not just on finals days – but all those that entered and participated throughout the Summer. Now…….. we’ll start thinking about Winter League!

Birr Wilmer Tennis Club’s annual senior open tournament which concluded weekend before last attracted a record entry and was by all accounts a very successful and enjoyable tournament.  Among those in the winners’ enclosure were Nenagh’s Anne Fitzpatrick and Brid Coffey, winners at ladies doubles, over Melissa Kenny and Csilla Varga.

Puckane’s Margaret Kelly and Eleanor Percy were r-up in another event, as were Joe Murphy and Wilmer (but former Kilruane) lady Paula Quinlan in a mixed event.  All Wilmer finals results are on Birr Wilmer Facebook pages.

Puckane Tennis Club had a very busy few weeks with their Summer Open Doubles tournament in progress.  There was a big entry and the finals day (and BBQ) was on last Saturday 29^th July and was by all accounts a great success.

Inter-Club Activity

The Munster inter-club summer competitions and Midland Tennis League are now in full swing. Nenagh have quite a few teams in action on both fronts.  Munster summer events are mainly knock-out, but Nenagh teams are apparently doing well.  We’ll have up-to-date reports this week.

Nathan Wins Again

Congratulations to Nathan Slattery who won the Under 14 Boys Singles Cat 1 event in Sutton LTC on Sunday week last.  Nathan was also a finalist in U.14 singles at Galway LTC Junior Open. Great stuff Nathan!

The procedure covers grades 3, 4, 5 and 6. All players entering open competitions, summer cup or winter league where points are awarded for match wins should be familiar with the upgrading procedure and grading system.

The onus is on each player to keep track of their own points and based on their points to ensure they enter competitions in the correct grading. This applies even if they have not been officially notified of an upgrade.
