Frank and Deirdre Impress In Croatia

By Tim Conway, Nenagh Guardian

Frank O’Keeffe and Deirdre McSherry had the honour of representing Ireland the ITF Young Seniors World Team Championships in Umag, Croatia recently.  The ITF Young Seniors World Team Championships is the highest ranked event on the ITF Seniors Circuit for male and female players in the age categories of 35-45, and as such the standard of tennis is significantly higher than one would generally encounter in Ireland.  However, Frank and Deirdre did extremely well in their matches, both playing a number of singles and doubles encounters, being competitive and achieving excellent results in rarefied company and both can justifiably be proud of their achievements.

Deirdre played 6 matches, winning 2, (singles against Canada, and doubles against Australian opponents), coming close in other matches and overall expressed herself as happy with her performances.  Spain were overall winners of Deirdre’s event, for the Margaret Court Cup, with Uruguay in 2nd place.

Frank played 5 matches in the Italia Cup, recording one win, but was competitive in other matches in high standard company, coming close but with overall victory evading him, but he also expressed himself as happy with his results.  Netherlands won that event, with Spain in 2nd place.

Nenagh’s Lena O’Connor was also selected for the Irish team but had to cry off at the last moment due to illness.  Aoife O’Neill (who recorded a notable win against her British opponent), Deirdre Collins and Kevin Rea from Limerick were also on the Irish team, as was Willie Reynolds from Tramore.  Willie is well known in Killaloe-Ballina tennis circles.
