South of Ireland Success

Nenagh Guardian – Tim Conway

Nenagh and other local players were very much to fore at the prestigious South of Ireland Championships at Limerick Lawn recently.

Lena O’Connor became 2016 ladies singles champion at Limerick Lawn, clinching the title in an all Nenagh final, her opponent being Anne Marie Darcy, who earlier had recorded notable wins over highly regarded Deirdre Collins in the semi-final, and before that over her (equally highly regarded) sister, Helena Darcy.

Anne Marie later joined Helena to win the doubles title.   Lena O’Connor was also mixed r-up (with Barry McCarthy).

Nenagh’s Pauline Ryan had an impressive tournament, winning 2 events, Gr 5 singles and mixed (with Mick Molloy), defeating Anne Murnane/Rainonds Zarinsh in that final.  An in-form Anne Murnane had earlier won the Gr 5 doubles with Amanda Hayes.

In Grade 2 Club Captain David Hackett teamed with J P Savy to win the Men’s Doubles Title.

Meanwhile at Gr 6, newcomer Eimear Gleeson won the single title while Portumna’s Keith Mulhall/Gillian Dunne were mixed winners.  Puckane’s Doireann Kennedy/Eoin Gleeson were runners-up here.  Stephen Devaney was Gr 6 singles r-up, as were Roscrea’s Billy Woods/Tim Mounsey in doubles.
