Ger Gavin Club Week 2014 – Tim Conway, Nenagh Guardian

The curtain came down on the Ger Gavin Home Interiors Nenagh LTC Club Championship on Saturday night following another enjoyable week’s tennis.

The tournament attracted a very satisfactory entry of members across the various grades and the excellent weather throughout the week undoubtedly enhanced the proceedings. The Tournament Committee were very happy indeed with the excellent overall turnout from club members.

As always with these championships a number of players stood out, indeed more players than usual last week. Agris Strods was perhaps the outstanding player, winning all three events available to him in his grade, winning Singles, Mens Doubles (with Naill Murphy) and Mixed (with Kate Heduan).

Close behind Agris was Kevin McKenna and Mary Slattery. Kevin won two Singles events, the Grade 1/2/3 combined and Grade 4. Mary was in three finals in her grade, winning two of them, Singles and Doubles (with Catherine Gibson).

Martin Ryan (Frolic) was again to the fore with his somewhat unique attacking play, allied with no little skill and shrewd shot selection (and dare we say equally shrewd partner selection). He combined with Frank O’Keffee to win the Men’s Doubles and Helene Darcy to annex the equivalent Mixed in Grade 1/2.

Maeve O’Sullivan also had a great tournament winning Singles and DOubles (with Nicola O’Carroll in Grade 5. Grade 6 saw Sharon Young capture the Singles Title and the Mixed (with William Talbot). As was Niall Murphy winning the Mixed and the men’s Doubles.

Among the more unusual combinations was the father and son team of Donal and Nick Flannery. The lads did very well, being runner-up in the Grade 3 Men’s Doubles to Brian McNamara and Kieran McSherry. Nick is obviously a very much improved player this season.

At an entertaining [presentation night Frank O’Keffee, Nenagh LTC Club Captain, thanks Brendan Gavin of Ger Gavin Home Interiors for their generous support of the tournament.
